One of the few Earthsea book cover artists who actually depict Ged and Tehanu as people of color. The author Ursula Le Guin describes Ged as "reddish dark", and the Gontish people in general as red-skinned.

DeleteWolfberry, I've just found this blog post, and appreciate your reasons for posting my work. Indeed, I chose my model for Ged partly because he actually was a person of color, and partly because he was so wizard-like! I literally found him on the street performing as a street musician, and he was happy to come to my studio and act the part. I mentioned this to Ms Le Guin, and she was in full agreement with my choice and the portrayal of her character. Yes, paying attention to ethnicity does matter! Thank you. David Bergen (blogging as 'Hawkwood'. To see an ethnic Andromeda, you are welcome to visit my blog post: http://whatthefiresaid.blogspot.com/2015/01/andromeda-2.html ).
ReplyDeleteDear Hawkwood, thank you for sharing the story behind the Ged model! Love your work!
